  1. I hear a lot of both of those bands, yet there is something more “energetic” and….interesting?….about Wormwitch that I’ve never really put my finger on. I struggle with both Tribulation and Inquisition, but I keep going back to Wormwitch time and time again. They just have that “it” factor for me.

  2. Quite a good list, guys.

-I’ll start right at the top with Archspire. Relentless Mutation is an inspired pick that I certainly can’t argue with. If I recall, I think I liked their previous album The Lucid Collective more than you guys did, so it didn’t come as quite the surprise to me that Archspire followed it up with an even better album this year.

-5 of my top 10 are on your list. One that’s not on your list that in general puzzles me is Royal Thunder. I say “in general” because Wick by Royal Thunder is not on anyone’s list this year (that I’ve seen so far). This is surprising to me because their 2 previous albums CVI and Crooked Doors were both highly acclaimed and received lots of mentions on year end lists in 2012 and 2015 (including yours in 2015). But I suppose that Wick is even less metal than either of their previous albums, which could explain some of the lack of love for Wick.

-Hey, we have one album ranked exactly the same: Mutoid Man at number 4.

-At first glance it does seem surprising that each of your top picks this year didn’t even appear on the other’s list. But this has happened before. Every time Cattle Decapitation puts out an album it tops Brian’s list but it doesn’t appear on Nick’s. And vice versa for Fair to Midland. I guess we all have bands like those because every time Allegaeon puts out an album it tops my list but doesn’t appear on yours.

-Nick, are the vocals on Cytotoxin really that big of a barrier? Cytotoxin is turning into one of my favorite tech death bands and has become the cream of the crop of Unique Leader bands.

-For the record, Dyscarnate just missed my list. And Unleash the Archers would have made a top 20 for me.

-And I guess I have been sleeping on Wormwitch.

    1. – You’ve definitely been sleeping on Wormwitch. It’s real real good.

      – As I think I mentioned on your Top list, I need to revisit Wick again now that some time has past.

      – One point of clarification: I gave The Anthropocene Extinction a 5 and it was number 3 on my personal year end list.

      1. I did remember that you (Nick) liked Cattle Decap’s Anthropocene Extinction better than Monolith of Inhumanity, but I totally forgot that you liked it enough to make it your number 3 album of the year.

And I am giving Wormwitch a shot. Wormwitch seems to blend so many influences into their music that I’m having a hard time discerning them all (which is not a bad thing). I do like that it falls into the realm of what I have grown to like listening to at this time of year: black metal. In particular, I keep going back to 2 bands: Inquisition and Tribulation.

    2. It’s Brian. I relations to The Lucid Collective and it is definitely better than I initially gave it credit for. That said, I still don’t think it is as memorable as Relentless Mutation, and the production is not even close to what they achieved on RM. They just need to keep this crushing production going forward.
