I could make some “D” jokes here, but we do that a bit in the episode, so I’ll try not to go too deep. It’s really hard, but I also don’t really get off on those kind of jokes, so I’ll just keep them in hand to shoot off another time. We wouldn’t to blow it before we even start.
(OK that’s it, I swear)

I’ve been listening to the album Lotus by Soen. This is the first album I’ve listened to by this band. I’m not sure why it took me so long to get around to giving Soen a try, because the founder of the band is former Opeth drummer Martin Lopez But I am here to tell you that while the music of Soen does at times remind me of Opeth, in no way is it “Opethian”. There are no sharp dynamic contrasts. There is a lot of solid, proggy but not too proggy music. I’d say that Soen is more in the style of Karnivool or possibly Caligula’s Horse.
Along those lines, I recently discovered a website called music-map.com that gives you a plot of bands that you are most likely to like if you like that band. A search for Soen on music-map.com lists Karnivool and then 20 bands I’ve never heard of.
We actually reviewed their second album, Tellurian, back in episode 164, where it got a 3.5. That half definitely come from Nick giving them a higher score than me. He may have also listened to the new album, but I haven’t yet. Maybe I’ll give it a try, but their other works haven’t stuck with me.
Music Map sounds pretty cool! That is something I will definitely give a try.
