Chimaira

Guess who made it back from last week?  Nick and Brian!  Oh, and Kyle too.  At full strength for two weeks in a row, we are bringing a jam-packed episode, including: 1 live review (complete with Brian fumbling over himself out of the gate), 2 brief appearances from future guest host Ryan Keough, 3 hosts, 4 album reviews, 5 first impressions, and 6 songs for your listening pleasure.

Reviews: Born of Osiris – Tomorrow We Die Alive (Sumerian); DevilDriver – Winter Kills (Naplam); Fleshgod Apocalypse – Labyrinth (Nuclear Blast); Watain – The Wild Hunt (Century Media)

First Impressions:

Skeletonwitch – “Burned from Bone” (in DB) from Serpents Unleashed out 10/29 via Prosthetic
Nine Inch Nails – “Copy of A” from Hesitation Marks out 9/3 via Universal
Anti-Mortem – “Words of Wisdom” from forthcoming debut via Nuclear Blast Entertainment
Trivium – “Strife” from Vengeance Falls out 10/15 via RoadRunner
Katatonia – “The One You are Looking for is Not Here” from Dethroned and Uncrowned out 9/10 via Kscope

For those of you who enjoyed Kyle’s presence last week, I hope you didn’t get too attached.  That pansie apparently can’t handle that much heavy music two weeks in a row. Luckily, Nick and Brian wear the pants in this awkward three-way relationship and are here for their ninety-sixth straight week.  And, this week, they switched up from the last month or so!  Instead of giving you a rundown of new singles in the First Impressions segment, they run down the tours (in the US) happening now through the fall…of which there are A LOT. So many, in fact, that they can’t even get to them all here! If you gotta catch them all, then you should follow us on Google + to get all the info.

Reviews: Chimaira – Crown of Phantoms (eOne); Mumakil*  – Flies Will Starve (Relapse); Old Gods – Stylized Violence (Forge Again); Razormaze – Annihilatia

*We apparently were butchering Mumakil’s name during the show.  Here is how to say it, plus a fun fact Brian forgot to share: Mumakil (pronounced “moom-a-keel”) is taken from the Lord of the Rings and is of the Speech of Men of the East, allies of Sauron. It’s a plural word for the oliphaunts: gigantic, multi-tusked elephant-like behemoths which struck fear into the hearts of those they faced.

**Since we’re doing asterisks this week, for those of you who are new to the podcast or may have forgotten, our intro and outro music are the sweet sounds of BY NIGHT, who have awesomely allowed us to use their music. Go check them out!

Boy do we have a long one for you!  Clocking in at 1 hour and 42 minutes (including over 15 minutes of music) I think we have a new record for longest Sideshow Podcast.  Why is it so long?  Well, for starters, Kyle is back this week, and just like any other time he is here, he hosts the show.  The ROCK(jock) takes through our our standard four new albums reviewed, plus a couple of previews, Brian’s live review of Kvelertak, and some further discussion on the Tim Lambesis situation. Yeah, it’s a jam packed show.  We’re just trying to give you more for your money…so to speak.

Reviews: Beyond Creation – The Aura (Season of Mist); Cathedral  The Last Spire (Metal Blade/Rise Above); Clutch – Earth Rocker (Weathermaker); The Dillinger Escape Plan  One of Us Is the Killer (Sumerian/Party Smasher)

Also, since I, Brian, write these little posts, let me say: I am acutely conscious of the fact I need to ameliorate my lexicon.  Yes, I apprehend I erroneously used the word ‘penultimate.’  Please pardon my limited knowledge of  the English language.

It’s Sunday morning.  I’m getting over a hangover.  I have been sitting here for 10 minutes and cannot think of anything remotely witty or clever to write.  So, here are some notes on this episode:

– Kyle is still MIA

– Brian and Nick review four new albums for you

– The dynamic duo also discuss some new singles from upcoming releases

– There is still no Clutch review due to Kyle not being present (see above)

– We did not review the new Dillinger Escape Plan album because we don’t have it yet (discussed a little more in the show)

– We do, however, have music to go along with the four album reviews

Reviews: Entrails  Raging Death (Metal Blade); Immolation – Kingdom of Conspiracy (Nuclear Blast); Shining  One One One (Prosthetic); TristaniaDarkest White (Napalm)

This is what happens when the ROCK(jock) plays in Photoshop (I must be breaking multiple copyright laws…)

Metalheads get it. We know a single song, no matter how good, can’t justify an entire album, much less a band. And yet, that continues to be how mainstream music defines worth, maybe more than ever thanks to iTunes. While we here at The SIDESHOW in no way endorse this business or artistic model, it did get us to thinking: What are some of our favorite songs, regardless of albums and bands?
